Congratulations to GWS graduating seniors and new PhDs, 2020

The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies congratulates the entire Berkeley class of 2020, and in particular the GWS majors and minors, LGBT minors, and the doctoral graduates with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.   We are proud of every single one of you!  In particular, we’d like to highlight the honor’s work of the four students who engaged in writing an honors thesis this year:

Kajol Gupta, “Dismantling Weight-Based Biopower and Biopolitics: An Intersectional Take on Eating Disorders in the American Food System.”

Sophia Moore, “Zong! At the Intersection of Art and Theory: Journey of a Reparative Detective.”

Mel Octaviano, “The Power of Chismeando: Social Cultural and Political Knowledge Constructed Through Chisme.”

Jasmine Ureno-Diaz, “Brujeria as Eco-Feminist Mind-Body-Spirit Resistance.”

We also congratulate the winners of departmental awards:

  • Elizabeth Hunter, Outstanding GSI
  • Sara Madani, David Getman Memorial Award in LGBT Studies
  • Eleanor McSpirit and Eleanor Skladman, David Getman Memorial Award in Global Women’s Studies
  • Alexander Gonzalez, GWS Excellence in Action Award
  • Kajol Gupta, GWS Departmental Citation

On May 19th the department held a Zoom celebration to recognize the hard work, passion, and creativity of our graduates. While it wasn’t what we had planned for, we were all deeply moved and energized by the opportunity to see our graduates together and to thank and honor them for all they’ve (you’ve) given to us while at Berkeley.  May the future hold opportunities for you to use what you’ve learned to make the world the place you imagine, and may you all thrive. Stay in touch!
