Gloria Bowles

Title:
Founding Coordinator, Women's Studies Program
Bio:

In the early seventies, after passing their Ph.D. exams in Comparative Literature (6 writtten exams and a two hour oral), a group of women students met to consider these requirements and to note that the 60 author reading list in several languages on which they were based included no women writers. Thus was born the Comp Lit women’s caucus, which began research on women writers and founded two undergraduate courses on women writers. From this seed was born the idea of an interdisciplinary women’s studies program. Living Ideas (2009) is the memoir of this founding by the first Coordinator, Gloria Bowles.
